Kiwibank

Eyede created for Kiwibank the ‘Loaded for Travel’ EMV chip Visa debit card.

Following from a strong relationship producing all credit and debit cards for Kiwibank, Eyede were asked to implement Kiwibank’s first EMV chip card. This was the first in the world to enable the card-holder to hold 5 currencies on one card. When launched, the sales exceeded projections.

Aims and Objectives

Develop a pre-paid Visa card for Kiwibank with the following aims:

  • Can be used worldwide wherever Visa is accepted
  • Benefits from the enhanced security that EMV chip offers
  • Customers can load 5 currencies on the one card – the first Visa card in the world to do this

Our Solution

In addition to guiding chip selection, Eyede enhanced its personalisation capability to enable EMV encoding. In addition Eyede managed a consortium of world class suppliers to achieve Kiwibank’s goal, including Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) Australasia. G&D is one of the world’s leading suppliers of payment cards, services, and smart card based solutions.

Before work on the creation of the chip card could begin, Eyede enhanced its bureau capabilities to personalise EMV cards. This involved:

  • Investment in personalisation and testing infrastructure
  • Establishing secure data transfer links between Kiwibank and Eyede and key suppliers
  • Bureau certification by Visa to personalise EMV cards

The work to produce a world-first chip card included:

  • Providing guidance in chip selection
  • Managing provision of card stock from Visa sign-off of initial design through to production
  • Profile development, data enrichment and Key Management by G&D
  • Management of Test phases from Visa white plastic review to UAT and End to End tests

Success Factors

  • Eyede created a world-first EMV card
  • Eyede enhanced card production capability to meet client expectations
